A fish landing yard along with significant infrastructure components is slated to be set up here in Seruthur. The foundation-laying ceremony for the facility proposed at a cumulative cost of Rs. 7.41 crore was held here on Friday.

The project envisages a 224-metre retaining wall, a fish auction centre, net drying yard, compound wall, and a concrete approach road, among the major infrastructure components. The yard would be amply equipped to include electrification and drinking water facilities.

Earlier, laying the foundation stone, Collector T. Munusamy said that an administrative clearance had been accorded to a deep-sea fishing harbour at Poompuhar at an estimated cost of Rs. 78.50 crore. The harbour envisages anchorage for deep-sea trawlers, fish processing centre, cold storage facility, and auctioning centre. The State government had allocated Rs. 19.25 crore towards repair and restoration of over 7,513 tsunami houses constructed by various NGOs.
