The Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday said that Railway Board Chairman Vinay Mittal was questioned on Thursday by the agency in connection with the alleged bribery case involving Vijay Singla, the nephew of the former Railway Minister, Pawan Kumar Bansal.

The former Railway Board (Staff) Member, Mahesh Kumar, who has been arrested in the case, had allegedly promised Mr. Singla a whopping Rs. 10 crore in return for appointment as Board Member (Electrical).

It is learnt that Mr. Mittal was questioned regarding the recent promotion of Mr. Kumar, who was allegedly given the additional charge of Western Railway.

“Mr. Mittal is not an accused in the case. No more arrests have been made,” said the official, adding that eight persons have been arrested in the case so far.

The police had earlier arrested Mr. Singla and his associates besides Mr. Kumar and the go-betweens who had allegedly paid Rs. 90 lakh in cash on his behalf.

Days after the arrest of his nephew, Mr. Bansal had to tender his resignation. While he dissociated himself from Mr. Singla, the CBI probe revealed that the latter made calls from his uncle’s official residence that were intercepted and recorded.
