Left Front MLAs protested inside the Assembly here on Wednesday, alleging modification of a question placed earlier by Leader of Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra.
The question pertained to the Jyoti Basu Nagar township, whose nomenclature a recent legislation passed by the House proposes to alter.
The entire question hour of the Assembly was lost in the din as the protesting legislators descended into the well of the House, shouted slogans, held up posters and tore papers.
The pandemonium continued for an hour, even as Speaker Biman Banerjee went ahead with the scheduled business of the House. He asked the Left Front MLAs to take their seats but they continued to raise slogans opposing the changes made in the question.
They had opposed withdrawal of The New Town, Kolkata Development Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2011 on Tuesday — a legislation that had proposed to name New Town, a township on the eastern fringes of the city, as Jyoti Basu Nagar
The Left Front MLAs boycotted the proceedings in the session after the recess.
