Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee will meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Finance Minister Amit Mitra in a bid to sort out financial problems of the State.

Mr. Mukherjee told journalists here that he would meet Ms. Banerjee on Sunday. “We will hold discussions and see what can be done,” he said, adding that besides the Chief Minister and the State Finance Minister, key officials at the Central and State level would attend the meeting.

On Wednesday, after her second Cabinet meeting, Ms. Banerjee said Mr. Mukherjee would meet the State Finance Minister to try to resolve the State's financial problems. Her presence at the meeting was a subsequent development. She had assured the government employees that their pay was assured for the next two to three months but after that something would have to be worked out.

Though the Trinamool claims on the State's financial woes have been countered by the former Finance Minister, Asim Dasgupta, the present government feels it has a tough job on hand and within hours of assuming office and even before deciding on the distribution of portfolios, Ms. Banerjee had named the Finance and Industry Ministers. Dr. Mitra, the former Secretary-General of the FICCI, faces the daunting task of presenting the Trinamool-Congress alliance government's first budget since Dr. Dasgupta presented only a vote on account ahead of Assembly elections.
