For cooperation in implementing development projects
Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had always helped where development projects were concerned.
Launching the Murshidabad Campus of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in the presence of Mr. Bhattacharjee at Suti, 70 km from the district capital of Baharampur, Mr. Mukherjee said: “The Chief Minister has always extended his helping hand wherever development projects are concerned. Today also he has encouraged us by his presence.”
The launch of the university, West Bengal's 19th — in Ahiran in Suti Block II in the Finance Minister's constituency — marks a fulfilment of Mr. Mukherjee's promises made during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
The campus will come up in 260 acres. Mr. Bhattacharjee too had written to ‘Pranab-da' for setting up this university in West Bengal.
Mr. Mukherjee said efforts were also on to set up a campus of the Institute of Management at Gurgaon in Murshidabad adding that the students of this management institute were getting jobs through placement offers even before passing out.
He said that the overall development of a country was marked by the education level of its population.
He said that the Murshidabad campus would commence its academic session from January from a temporary building.
The plan for the new building was ready and the work would start as soon as possible.
Mr. Bhattacharjee said that he was hopeful that the new university would play a role in the spread of education in the State and the AMU was an institution for all and not only the Muslim community.
“We have tried to spread the message of education while improving its standards and modernising it. We want secular education institutes with a high standard of education in the State,” he said.
