The police in Medak district seized red sandalwood worth Rs. 1.5 crore at Munipally on Wednesday.

The sandalwood smugglers made a perfect plan and changed even the registration number of the vehicle but a casual check by the police foiled their plan.

According to Sangareddy DSP G. Venkatesh, police were forced to chase a DCM van which tried to give the slip to the police even as they tried to stop it.

Later, police found red sandalwood logs in the vehicle weighing about 5.5 tonnes. While the sticker on the number plate suggested the van number was AP 16 TC 8388, there was another number – TN 18 K- 3888- under the sticker. Watermelon and grass were stacked in the upper layer of the vehicle while sandalwood logs were piled in the bottom part.

Fake bill

The way bill was produced as if they were transporting fruits in the van.

Mr. Venkatesh said that the van driver escaped but the group of smugglers would be arrested.
