A petition was filed on Thursday before the Kerala High Court challenging the appointment of K.S. Balasubramanian as State Police Chief.

The petition was filed by K. Krishnan Kutty, former MLA and others. According to them, the constitution of the post of State Police Chief was not in accordance with the procedure laid down by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court in Prakash Singh and Others vs. Union of India had directed the State governments to ensure complete and full independent functioning of the police machinery. The post of police chief had been created under the provisions of the Kerala Police Act 2011. The enactment was only an eyewash and an attempt to circumvent the order of the Supreme Court. The State government had miserably failed to ensure independent functioning of the State police force and constitute a separate investigation wing as ordered by the Supreme Court, they alleged.
