Communist Party of India (Marxist) State unit secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has called for action against police officials who allegedly beat up and injured MLAs and members of All India Democratic Women’s Association on Wednesday during their protest, demanding the resignation of Rajya Sabha deputy chairman P.J. Kurien in connection with the Suryanelli sexual exploitation case.
Mr. Vijayan, speaking at the A.P. Varkey memorial at Thiruvankulam, near here, accused the United Democratic Front government of using force to put down protests. He warned the government of serious consequences if it followed the path of violence against peaceful protestors.
The CPI (M) secretary said he was not satisfied with the government’s promise of an inquiry into the incidents.
The Congress was spreading canards against his party. Attack on CPI (M) activists had been unleashed with government’s blessings, he claimed.
Mr. Vijayan asked why the Oommen Chandy government was unwilling to reopen the Suryanelli case as he had done in the case of M.M. Mani, the former Idukki district secretary of the CPI(M).
