MUMBAI: Varun Agarwal, a 28-year-old pilot with a private airline, was arrested at Mumbai airport on Saturday afternoon on a charge of raping an air hostess.
Senior police inspector Ashok Vishnu Jadhav told The Hindu over phone that Varun was arrested under Sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 376 (punishment for rape), 417 (punishment for cheating) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
The case was registered on Thursday. According to the police, the air hostess was living with Varun here after their engagement in 2008. Both hail from Kashipur in Uttaranchal.
Their marriage was scheduled for April 28 last.
However, 10 days before the wedding, Varun allegedly threw the air hostess out of the house.
“She said she was going to commit suicide, but we talked her out of it,” said a constable at the Powai police station.
The police asked her to inform them when Varun arrived here. “Whenever he was called for questioning, he would say he was out of station.”
