A large number of workers affiliated to the Trade Union Coordination Centre (TUCC) staged a dharna in front of the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner's office here on Monday protesting against large-scale non-coverage of workers under the Employees' Provident Fund Scheme and the alleged corruption in PF offices.
TUCC president G.R. Shivashankar said more than 6 lakh workers in the State have not been covered under the provident fund scheme though employers are bound by law to offer PF coverage to their staff. The protesters said at least 21 companies have not provided PF facility to their employees and action should be taken against them immediately failing which they would intensify their agitation.
Mr. Shivashankar said in many companies only some employees are covered under the PF scheme while a majority of them are left out. This is solely because of the apathy of the provident fund authorities and the large-scale corruption prevailing in their offices. Though there were about 50 PF Commissioners in the State, he alleged that they were not working for the welfare of the working class.
According to Mr. Shivashankar, because the PF offices do not deliver on time, hundreds of people are forced to flock the PF offices every day across the State.
