The theme country of the 38{+t}{+h}International Kolkata Book Fair scheduled to begin on January 29, 2014 is Peru, the Publishers and Book Sellers Guild, organising the event, said here on Monday.

“Noted Peruvian poet Carlos Germán Belli will inaugurate the Book Fair [on January 28],” said Javier Paulinich, Ambassador of Peru in India, adding that “Mr. Belli is the most important living poet in Peru is very excited about coming to Kolkata on his first visit to India.”

Describing Kolkata as the “cultural capital of India”, Mr. Paulinich said: “The Book Fair is a very important platform for the promotion of the culture and literature not only of Peru but also of various other Latin American countries.”

With regard to the presence of Peruvian culture in the International Kolkata Book Fair, Mr. Paulimich said, “We wish to bring some internationally acclaimed Peruvian writers.

Apart from a huge exhibition of books on Peru there will also be performances by Peruvian dancers and singers.”

Apart from the presence of 10 famous authors from Peru, noted Chilean film maker Miguel Littin, Mexican author Carla Faesler, Fernando Denis and famous Indian novelist Shashi Tharoor would also be present at the Book Fair.

The Book Fair would also be attended by the legendary Colombian goalkeeper Rene Higuita and famous physicist and Mani Bhaumik.

“Through the International Kolkata Book Fair, 2014 the Golden Jubilee of the Indo–Peru Diplomatic Relationship will be celebrated,” said Tridib K. Chatterjee, honorary general secretary of the Publishers and Booksellers Guild.
