Restoration of waterbodies has been the highlight of the Kadampadi village panchayat’s implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

Located about 20 km from here, this panchayat has seen improvement of basic amenities too in recent months.

It is for all these reasons that Kadampadi has been chosen as one of the high-performing panchayats. Awards for the districts and panchayats will be presented in New Delhi on Saturday.

Coming under Sulur block, the panchayat comprises three revenue villages- Kadampadi, Sengathurai and Kumarapalayam. An official of the Coimbatore District Rural Development Agency says the panchayat, with a population of 7,499, plans nearly five months in advance the activities to be taken up under the scheme during a financial year.

As many as 352 families benefited from the scheme in 2011-2012 and the figure of wages given was nearly Rs. 21 lakh.

S. Rangasamy, panchayat president, points out that nearly 70 per cent of the beneficiaries are women. They do not have to travel long distances for work.
