KOLKATA: The “blame” for the pullout of the Tata Motors from Singur “squarely lies with the Opposition parties” led by the Trinamool Congress and the “obstructionist stance of the party and other reactionary forces,” Prakash Karat, Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary, said here on Tuesday.

“This does not mean a full stop to the goal of the Left Front government to pursue the development in West Bengal,” he added.

Asked to comment on Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s demand that land acquired for the project be returned to farmers, who had accepted compensation for their plots Mr. Karat said that “it is for the Left Front government to decide what should be done” after looking into the legal and technical aspects.

“I am sure that the government will look for alternative options at Singur,” he added.
