One person arrested, large police picket posted in the area

KOLKATA: One person was killed and another seriously injured on the eve of Muharram late on Sunday at Rampurhat in West Bengal’s Birbhum district. Two groups clashed over which one would take out a religious procession first.

While the victim Abdul Hai was stabbed to death, Raja Sheikh was critically injured and had to be transferred to Kolkata on Monday.

“Trouble broke out between the two groups over who would take out the tajia first.

Bombs hurled

They started hurling bombs at each other, one of which hit Sheikh.

Later, Sheikh’s relatives raided the house of Mr. Hai and stabbed him,” Sukhendu Heera, Rampurhat’s sub-divisional police officer told The Hindu over telephone.

Mr. Heera said one person was arrested and a large police picket was posted in the area.
