Coal shortage again forced NTPC Simhadri Super Thermal Power Station to shut down its third unit.

NTPC has four units at Parawada plant near here each with a capacity to generate 500 MW. The State Grid gets entire 1,000 MW produced from first phase under a special arrangement and 335 MW from second phase.

An NTPC official told The Hindu that the third unit was shut down due to non-availability of sufficient coal from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited’s Talcher mines.

Short-supply of raw material has remained an issue of constant worry for the NTPC management despite its efforts to import coal and use it by blending with locally available raw material.

At present, the company is generating at full load at the three other units, the official pointed out.
