Yet to receive details of security forces available: State Election Commissioner

Even as the West Bengal State Election Commission issued a notification for the first phase of the three-phase panchayat elections in the State here on Monday, setting in motion the electoral process, State Election Commissioner Mira Pande said the State was yet to provide it the details of security forces available to it.

“We are watching the situation….We expect that the State government will take due note of the order of the High Court…We expect the government should inform [about security forces] by Tuesday,” she said.

On how the election panel could issue the notification without having details about the availability of security forces, Ms. Pande said the Commission can wait till May 29 as filing of nomination papers by candidates for the first phase of polls in nine districts starts that day.

Meanwhile, raising concerns about the security of their candidates, the Left Front and the Congress have demanded that the election panel ensures security to candidates from the time the filing of nomination papers commences.
