A day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused some leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for holding huge amount of monies in their names, CPI(M) State secretary Biman Bose said there was no lack of transparency in the accounts and there was nothing to conceal.
Making a public statement for the first time on the matter, which also received publicity in a section of the press on Friday, Mr. Bose took a jibe at the ruling party, saying that some knowledge of the Communist Party was needed to understand its ways and its funds flow.
“There is nothing shocking about the accounts... It is a procedural matter,” Mr. Bose quipped at Saturday’s press meet.
Referring to the lakhs sitting in a joint account held by him and senior party leader Nirupam Sen, he said: “This is complicated arithmetic that not many may follow,” explaining how the party raised funds through a system of levies on its members, party legislators and parliamentarians. The gharana of this party is different... One needs some knowledge, sense to understand its ways its systems,” he said commenting that an indisciplined party would not understand this.
The accounts are regularly submitted for audit and sent to the income tax authorities and the Election Commission of India, Mr. Bose said.
Mr. Bose, however, admitted that the party had not tracked its instruction to the bank for changing the status of the account from that of an individual account to a party account. “We only came to know recently that CPI(M) West Bengal State unit’s name had not been entered into the banks ledgers… This is a lapse which has been rectified now.”
“But I understand very well why an issue is being made out of all this by our Opposition... How can they not use such an opportunity during poll times,” he quipped sarcastically.
