Gold merchants have not stopped sale of gold bars and gold coins, B. Girirajan, president of All Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants Association, said on Friday.

The association represents nearly 5,000 merchants.

Mr. Girirajan in a statement said there was no ban on sale of gold bars and coins. Though gold merchants association had not taken any decision to stop the sale, such an impression had been created in public mind because of some media reports.

But he admitted that there was a shortage of 24-carat gold because of restrictions on gold imports imposed by the Centre. Nearly seven to eight per cent of total consumption of the gold in the State was in the form of coins and bars, Mr Girirajan said.
