In a blow to the Janata Dal (United), Rajya Sabha member N.K. Singh quit the party and is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party.

“Yes, I have quit JD (U),” Mr. Singh told The Hindu and added that he had written a letter to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar conveying his reasons for leaving the party.

He confirmed that senior BJP leaders, including party president Rajnath Singh and Bihar BJP chief Sushil Modi, were in touch with him. “I am giving it [joining the BJP] a serious thought,” he said. It is unlikely that he will contest the Lok Sabha elections.

A former bureaucrat who had served in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, Mr. Singh’s Rajya Sabha term is coming to an end next month. He was denied a renomination to the Upper House.
