The Centre proposes to rationalise MV Tax, levying a lifetime tax at the floor rate of 6 per cent on sale price of two-wheelers, cars and light motor vehicles. Wednesday’s meeting of the Transport Development Council here will also decide on rationalising taxes for taxis and maxis, and consider introduction of a national permit system for buses on the lines of the one for goods vehicles. Another issue to be considered is overloading by trucks, one of the reasons for accidents, besides causing damage to highways. Minister for Road Transport and Highways Oscar Fernandes will preside over the meeting. — K. Balchand
