The Indian Union Muslim League will file a writ petition against a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) report absolving Ramdas Pothen, the then Superintendent of Police of Kasaragod, accused of shooting to death a young party sympathiser during an episode of violence in Kasaragod on November 15, 2009.
A meeting presided over by the party’s district unit president, Cherkalam Abdulla, took the decision here on Sunday.
The deceased, Shafeeq of Kaithakkad, near Cheruvathur, was not on the list of accused in the first two investigation reports on the violence submitted by officials under Mr. Pothen, but was arraigned as an accused in the report submitted by a third official, the meeting said.
This was done to tarnish the party, said the meeting, attended by two MLAs and other senior leaders from the district.
Shefeeq had no hand in the violence, which took two lives, that followed a commotion as the crowd got dispersed after a civic reception to senior State-level leaders of the party. The officer fired from the service revolver in the guise of self-defence.
M.C. Khamaruddin, party district general secretary, said the CBI report was aimed at shielding Mr. Pothen.
