Murder accused attacked near police station

A murder accused on conditional bail, five of his family members, and another man were attacked with deadly weapons near Annathanapatti police station in the city here on Wednesday morning.

The incident took place around 9.30 a.m. when M. Babu (33) of Karuppur, who was accused in the murder of financier Shanmugam, and in a chain-snatching case in 2012, was on his way to the police station to sign the register. Family members who accompanied the accused were in the car.

When the car neared Uttarapankadu, about 300 metres away from the police station, a gang blocked the vehicle with a vegetable pushcart and inflicted injuries on the six using long knives.

All of them suffered injuries on their hands and shoulders. Raja, a bystander, who tried to prevent the attack on the family, also suffered multiple fractures and was admitted to a private hospital. The others were admitted to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital. Doctors said Suresh is fighting for his life, while the others are out of danger. Annathanapatti police have registered a case.
