The civic body may move Supreme Court
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) appear to be heading towards a showdown on the issue of sealing.
On Tuesday, the Monitoring Committee reiterated that the civic body has to resume from Wednesday the sealing drive on roads that are 80 feet or more in width, but MCD officials, under pressure from the Centre, are not willing to go ahead with the exercise.
The civic body officials held a meeting in the evening but refused to divulge the details. Sources in the MCD said the civic body might move the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
With Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy announcing on Tuesday that the Master Plan for Delhi-2021 would be notified within 48 hours, the MCD officials are now trying to buy time.
On Wednesday the MCD may move the apex court seeking further directions in view of the Minister's statement.
The officials are hoping that the notification of the new Master Plan on Thursday may bail them out of the peculiar situation.
Coming out after a prolonged meeting on the issue, Municipal Commissioner A.K. Nigam refused to clarify whether sealing would resume from Wednesday.
