A police sub-inspector here has been booked on the charge of raping a 22-year-old girl after she complained that he maintained physical relations with her after falsely promising her of marriage. Police said action would be taken against the accused only after investigation.

A case under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code was registered at the RCF police station late on Thursday night against Sachin Dabholkar, who is on probation. He is presently under deputation at the Mulund police station.

“There are a lot of flip-flops in the statement given by the victim. Earlier, she said he had threatened her. She denied that there were physical relations between the two. Then she came back to the police station and said he had maintained physical relations with her by falsely promising of marriage. She said he was reluctant to marry to her now,” Qaisar Khalid, Zonal Additional Commissioner of Police, told The Hindu on Friday.

The police earlier registered a non-cognisable offence against Dabholkar, but when the victim changed her statement, they booked him for rape.

According to the police, the victim approached the RCF police station in June 2012 after losing her cell phone. Police said Dabholkar, who was then deputed there, traced her phone. They then became friends and were in a relationship. Police said that a few months later, Dabholkar declined to marry her, due to which she registered a complaint against him.

The police are awaiting medical reports of the victim. They will also go through the call records of the two.
