The mother of three-month-old Aahuti Joshi, who succumbed to severe internal injuries four days ago at a local hospital, has confessed to hitting and physically assaulting her daughter, police said on Thursday. A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the parents charging them with murder. The mother could be arrested late on Thursday night.

“We are still investigating the case. The mother has said that she used to beat the baby, but she may not have intended to kill her,” Mumbai Additional Commissioner of Police (north region) Sunil Paraskar told TheHindu . However, she did not say why she beat the child.

Mr. Paraskar said the parents were summoned to the police station on Thursday since they had left for Kutch, in Gujarat, a few days ago for the last rites of the baby. “They came today morning and we have been questioning them since then.”

He said the mother would be booked for murder though she might not have intended to kill the baby. According to the woman’s confession, her husband was not aware of what was going on. But the police were verifying if she was trying to protect him.

Aahuti Joshi was admitted to the city’s KEM hospital a few days ago. She was found to have multiple skull fractures, internal injuries, rib fracture and vertebrae dislocation. Police said there were also some minor external injuries.

The post-mortem report, which was handed over to the police on Wednesday, clearly stated that the death could not have been natural or accidental. “The doctors told us that the baby could not injure herself so grievously from an accidental fall,” Mr. Paraskar said. They reportedly told the police that the symptoms were typical of battered baby syndrome.

The police have sent the baby’s viscera for analysis and the reports are awaited. Police officers refused to give further details of the interrogation of the parents, Dharmishta and Kalpesh Joshi. “We are still investigating. We will only be able to provide details on Friday,” a police officer said.
