Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury applied for anticipatory bail before a district court in the State’s Murshidabad district through his lawyers on Tuesday, five days after a court issued an arrest warrant against him.
He has been accused in a charge sheet filed by the district police last month in connection with the murder of a local Trinamool Congress leader in May 2011.
“He has been charged with criminal conspiracy by the police. We filed an application before the Court of District and Sessions Judge Murshidabad during the day seeking anticipatory bail,” Mr. Chowdhury’s counsel Kanchan Lal Mukherjee said.
He also said bail had been sought as there was no concrete evidence against the Minister to make him an accused in the case. His client had been listed in the charge sheet even though his name had not figured in the first information report.
Mr. Chowdhury had described the charges against him as an act of “political vendetta” by the Trinamool Congress government in the State as the ruling party failed to make any inroads in the district.
