V.T. Balram, MLA, has said that the ministerial decision to give pension to members of the Zamorin family cannot be accepted.
He was inaugurating a Sajithlal commemoration meeting and a students gathering organised by the Kerala Students Union (KSU) at the chamber hall here on Friday.
The government has decided to provide pension amounting to Rs.2,500 each to 826 members of the family, which will result in a liability of Rs.2.5 crore to the government every year. The move will be opposed by the KSU and the Youth Congress, Mr. Balram said.
The government should withdraw the decision, he said.
The legislator said campuses should become platforms for propagating ideas and not places of violence. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) resisting the arrest of its leaders involved in legal cases is immature, he said calling upon the KSU and the Youth Congress to expose CPI(M) hubs such as Mudakkozhimala where these leaders are protected.
Later, inaugurating Nadeevandanam, a Youth Congress initiative to protect the Kakkad river, Mr. Balram said the death of a river was the passing away of a culture itself
