Over 30 women were injured when a mini lorry in which they returned to their village from Kandikuppam near Krishnagiri overturned while giving way to a bus coming in the opposite direction on Thursday evening.
The accident took place when over forty members of four women self-help groups from A. Nagamangalam village situated between Jagadevi and Bargur in Krishnagiri district were returning from a rally and cultural festival organised in connection with the International Women's Day.
The mini van carrying the women and three children overturned near Jogulu Mariamman Temple in BRG Madhepalli village. Six of them M. Munilakshmi (57), M. Kavitha (27), A. Rajeshwari, N. Arpudham (60), S. Lakshmi (43) and V. Visalakshi (43) were grievously injured and the other injured along with them were brought to the Government Headquarters Hospital in Krishnagiri by the available ambulances and police vehicles.
Police arrested the injured van driver S. Prabhakar of A. Nagamangalam village.
Anandan Ambrose, Project Officer, Kingsley Community Centre, who organised the women's day fest, visited the hospital along with his staff and consoled the injured. He told The Hindu that the centre will provide necessary medical help apart from helping to claim insurance.
