The Lok Sabha Secretariat on Friday clarified that Speaker Meira Kumar has nothing to do with the bungalow allotted at 6 Krishna Menon Marg here for the Babu Jagajivan Ram National Foundation, and she is not occupying the premises.
Responding to the media reports in this regard, the Secretariat, in a release said the Foundation, to which the bungalow was allotted for a monthly rent of Rs. 79,565, is an autonomous body under the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
“It is, therefore, out of context and malicious to claim that Ms. Kumar will have any stake in the bungalow for at least another 25 years.”
On media reports which alleged that the government had waived Rs. 1.98 crore for the bungalow, the release said: “This also is factually wrong. There were no dues against the family of Ms. Kumar as they had vacated the premises on time on November 30, 2002. Upon realisation of the factual position, the Ministry of Urban Development had withdrawn the recovery case in December 2011,” it said.
During the period 2002-2009, the Speaker was staying at her private accommodation and not occupying the bungalow, it said.
Ms. Kumar, a former Indian Foreign Service officer, is the daughter of former Deputy Prime Minister late Babu Jagjivan Ram and the bungalow, where he lived till his death in 1986, is now being used a memorial for him. After Jagjivan Ram’s death, his wife Indrani Devi was living there.
