HYDERABAD: Medak in Andhra Pradesh now has an SA 8000 certification, for Social Accountability.

It is granted by a New York based non-governmental agency, Social Accountability International, after examining social and human aspects of administration and management.

SAI sent a team of auditors accredited to the Genoa-based Italian Classification Society to Medak last month. The focus of the audit was management of social issues such as child labour, forced labour, health and safety, freedom of association, freedom from discrimination, disciplinary practices, working hours, remuneration and management practices, particularly grievance-handling.

"Simply put, it is not just about protecting the rights of children and employees in workplaces but [about] how humane and responsive the administration is to people's needs. I am happy we have passed the rigorous test," District Collector B. Venkatesham said.

"We wanted a reputed and internationally known independent agency to assess us after we have put in place a social management system... . There will be a continuous review every six months."
