The All-Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union has called a 24-hour general strike to protest the killing of a truck driver and arson by tribal militants at Charou Pandongba village along National Highway 37, linking Jiribam to Imphal, late Wednesday night.

It is said the drivers and helpers of two stranded trucks, bringing rice cement from Assam to Imphal, were preparing scratch meals in the tribal village near Keithelmani, when eight tribals, armed with M-16 rifles, opened fire at them, killing Babu Ashem (40). The others escaped under cover of darkness. Later, the militants doused the trucks with petrol and torched them.

In protest against the killing, people at Samurou in Imphal West district, from where the deceased hailed, blocked traffic on Thursday.

In another incident, a housewife was shot and injured in Imphal East District on Thursday.
