Subbiah (62) of Anna Nagar in Sirumugai, employed as a security guard in a private firm at Madukkarai, was trampled to death by a wild elephant in the small hours of Thursday.

It is learnt that the victim was moving closer to the firing range and spotted an elephant.

Attempts by the victim to escape went in vain.

Forest officials led by District Forest Officer V. Thirunavukkarasu rushed to the spot and made arrangements to chase the elephant back into the forest.

Forest Department gave away Rs. 25,000 to the family as a relief immediately and the remaining solatium will be given after adhering to procedural formalities, the officials said.
