“Nothing about this government pleases you,” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told journalists here, referring to the negative publicity in the media about her government.

“This government, burdened with crores of rupees of debts, is functioning despite paying interest and principal on loans incurred in the past,” she said on Tuesday.

On the rain havoc in parts of the country, Ms. Banerjee pointed out that while Mumbai and Delhi got completely submerged, with even telephone lines not working, such a situation had not arisen in the city.

But “if Kolkata gets submerged for a day then you all start screaming,” she said.

Ms. Banerjee’s remarks have come when there is widespread criticism of the government for “failing to check” crimes against women.
