Major fire destroys sunflower seeds, copra worth Rs.4 crore

In a major fire, large quantities of copra and sunflower seeds stacked at a rented godown operated by National Bulk Handling Corporation Limited at Kottamangalam near Udumalpet were destroyed on Tuesday.

Police officials said that the loss was estimated at around Rs. 4 crore.

The fire, an accidental one, was noticed by public in one of the yards where the copra and sunflower seeds were stored. It was put out by fire and rescue services department after fighting it out for many hours.

The personnel prevented the fire from spreading to the nearby yards where cotton was stockpiled. The Gudimangalam police have registered a case and are investigating.
