Protesting against the rise in prices of essential commodities and the State government’s indifference on the issue, Left Front leaders and activists staged a demonstration outside Khadya Bhavan, headquarters of the State Food and Supplies department, here on Tuesday.  Manab Mukherjee, State Committee member of the Communist Party of India, slammed the Centre’s economic policy that is resulting in the increase in prices and also criticised the State government for not taking any initiative to provide relief to the common people.

Pointing out that the State government can play a significant role in bringing down the prices of essential commodities by “removing the cess on petrol and diesel in the State,” he said, “High fuel prices lead to the price hike in other commodities.”

“Not being properly implemented”

Mr. Mukherjee also regarded the Centre’s Food Security Bill as existing “only in speeches and is not being properly implemented.”

Left leaders also alleged that the task force set up by the State government to control the price rise is engaged in simply visiting various market places in the city.
