The law and order situation in West Bengal is bad, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said here on Sunday.
“Almost every day there is violence and killing,” he said when asked to comment on the murder of a local Congress leader at Basanti in South 24 Parganas district late on Saturday night and the violence at Netai near Lalgarh in Paschim Medinipur district on January 7.
Asked by journalists about his views on the role of the State government in containing the violence, Mr. Mukherjee avoided any direct comment. Instead he said: “Law and order is failing. For whom [is this so]?” On the killings at Netai, Mr. Mukherjee said Manas Bhunia, president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee, had visited the area and expressed his views on the incident.
