Even as the sowing of rabi wheat has picked up, it is still behind the area covered in the corresponding period last year. So far 120.77 lakh hectares has been cultivated as against 121.98 lakh hectares last year.
A meeting of the Crop and Weather Watch Group in the Agriculture Ministry was informed that the area coverage of wheat was “marginally less” due to late harvesting of kharif paddy crop in Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh and also because of non-receipt of sowing information from some sub- divisions of Uttar Pradesh. However, higher coverage had been reported from Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat. The sowing area under coarse cereals at 41.91 lakh hectares is lower than last year's level of 43.78 lakh hectares.
The good news is that the area under pulses at 92.94 lakh hectares is about 5 lakh hectares higher than last year in the corresponding period.
Oilseeds cultivation is reported to be 65.69 lakh hectares against 65.94 lakh hectares sown this time last year. Higher area coverage has been reported from West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. While the area under rapeseed and mustard oil is higher than last year, the coverage of groundnut and sunflower is reported to be “marginally lower”.
