The government has finally decided to commence the year-long celebrations of Kakatiya festival from December 21 at Warangal marking the 800{+t}{+h}anniversary of the construction of famous Ramappa temple.

Inaugural functions of the celebrations will be organised for three days from this date at archaeological sites of Kakatiyas at Warangal--Thousand-Pillar temple and Warangal Fort besides, Ramappa temple. The celebrations would also be held at other important places, which formed part of Kakatiya empire.

The historical monuments at these locations hold mirror to the rich culture and heritage of Kakatiyas, whose was the second largest Telugu empire next to that of Rayas of Vijayanaraga, spread from Daksharamam in East to Gulbarga in West and from Orissa in North to Kanchi in South.

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, who finalised the dates at a meeting here on Thursday with Ministers Ponnala Lakshmaiah (Information Technology), B.Saraiah (Backward Classes Welfare) and D.K. Aruna (Information) and officials, also agreed to release a sum of Rs.1 crore immediately for the purpose.

The Ministers and M. Panduranga Rao, a retired professor, Regional Engineering College, Warangal, whose reports on Kakatiya structures helped archaeological authorities to undertake works to rehabilitate them, told reporters later that plans were afoot to establish a Kakatiya International Convention Centre at Orugallu (Warangal) through PPP mode.

The Chief Minister will lay the foundation stone for this during the celebrations after detailed project report was ready.

Mr. Lakshmiah said a website for the festival would be launched soon focussing on Kakatiya architecture, literature and culture besides, water resources developed by them such as lakes of Ramappa, Lakkavaram and Pakala. These irrigation sources were still in perfect working condition, serving a vast cropped area and providing drinking water to millions. All edicts of Kakatiyas would be listed and displayed on the net. Efforts were on to display 3-D pictures of Kakatiya monuments on the net in coordination with Google.
