N.M. Mohan, one of the pioneers in children’s magazine publication and creator of a number of popular children’s story characters in Malayalam, passed away on Wednesday following a heart attack. He was 63.

Mr. Mohan, who was staying at his home near Nattassery after retirement, was married to Latha, daughter of the late Vaikom Chandrasekharan Nair.

Mr. Mohan had his education at St. Thomas College, Pala, and NSS Hindu College, Changanassery, before starting his journalistic career in the Chitrakarthika , a Malayalam weekly published from Thiruvananthapuram. After some time, he moved to the Poombatta , one of the pioneering children’s magazines in Malayalam, and later to the Balarama as its Editor-in-Charge. Mr. Mohan was the creator of some of the most popular characters of children’s stories, including Mayavi and other characters in the series.
