The Janata Dal (Secular) alleged here on Thursday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost the Mayoral election on Wednesday because of infighting.

M.G. Hegde, JD(S) State unit Secretary, told presspersons here on Thursday that the loss of election brought the differences within the BJP to the fore.

He said the BJP's nominee Roopa D. Bangera lost the election because of a conspiracy by a group within the BJP. If not how could an official nominee of an “experienced party” fail to submit nomination papers properly, he questioned.

He said some BJP leaders had given contradictory statements for the party's defeat. He alleged that there was a Constitutional crisis in the Mangalore City Corporation now.

The BJP had pushed the council into chaos. It was because there was no clarity on whether the BJP or the Congress was in the Opposition now.

He said that both the parties should make their stand clear as to who would occupy Opposition benches. The BJP should make it clear whether it accepted a Mayor from the Congress.

Mr. Hegde alleged that the BJP had betrayed people. Now people would have to face the consequences of confusion in the administration.
