Jayalalithaa to launch freerice scheme on Wednesday

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa will launch the free rice distribution scheme at a function at Alwarpet here on Wednesday. This will be her first public function after assuming office.

A senior official said that early this week, she gave away assistance to fisher folk, but the event took place at Fort St. George housing the Secretariat. As part of the scheme, 1.83 crore cardholders are entitled to 20 kg of rice a month subject to fulfilling the norms.

As per existing norms, four kg rice per adult and two kg per child is supplied subject to a minimum of 12 kg and a maximum of 20 kg per month per card except in the Nilgiris where the minimum will be 16 kg and the maximum, 24 kg. Apart from the cardholders, 18.62 lakh persons are covered under the Antodaya Anna Yojana scheme.
