The Madras High Court bench here on Thursday ordered an interim stay on the appointment of vice-chancellor in-charge in the Gandhigram Rural Institute (deemed university) based on a petition filed by the dean in the faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry in the University.

The petitioner, T. Senthilvel, claimed as per the statutes of the GRI, the senior most dean should perform the duties of the vice-chancellor until an appointment was made.

According to the petitioner, he is the senior-most dean, but the Registrar issued an impugned order on September 10, 2013 appointing A. Joseph Durairaj, the dean of faculty of English and Foreign Languages, as the vice-chancellor in-charge.

Justice S. Nagamuthu also ordered notice to the registrar and adjourned the case by two weeks.
