The participation of regional film industry segments to be ensured

PANAJI: The International Film Festival of India 2006 will open here on November 23 with the screening of Volver, a Spanish film directed by Pedro Almodovar. Mexican film Bable, by Alejandro Gonzalez, will bring the curtain down on the 37th edition of IFFI on December 3.

The organising committee met here under the joint chairmanship of Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi and Goa Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane on Monday"The meeting approved the memorandum of understanding to be signed between the I& B Ministry and the Goa Government for IFFI, 2006, but the actual MoU would be signed shortly," said Nandini Paliwal, chief executive officer of the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), the nodal agency of the State Government organising IFFI jointly with DFF.

Under the proposed MoU, all logistical and administrative issues, including publicity, hospitality, and designing of the opening and closing ceremonies, will be handled by the ESG on behalf of the State Government, while the mandate of programming will remain with the DFF.

The meeting cleared the names of the jury for the national and international film panorama sessions. Australian director Relfdeheer will head the five-member international jury.

With its aim to woo and involve the participation of sections of the film industry from different parts of the country, the ESG will launch a major publicity drive in some 10 cities. "We want to make concerted efforts to address the concerns expressed hitherto that not adequate attention was accorded to the participation of regional film industries in the country at earlier IFFIs," said Ms. Paliwal.
