NEW DELHI: Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, former Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati University (Santiniketan), has been appointed Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR). He will hold the office for three years from the day he takes charge.
A specialist in Indian economic history, Prof. Bhattacharya is a member of the Council. He is expected to assume office on Saturday. The term of the last Chairman, D.N. Tripathi, expired on February 4, and Additional Secretary in the Union Human Resource Development Ministry K.M. Acharya has been holding additional charge of the ICHR since then.
Prof. Bhattacharya was a professor of Indian economic history at the Jawaharlal Nehru University. He has also been President of the Indian History Congress.
