The High Court on Tuesday ordered 15 days imprisonment of Ms. Ranjeev Acharya, former Secretary, Mines & Geology, and the former Director of Mines Sushil Kumar and imposed a fine of Rs. 3,000 on each.
The order was issued by Justice P. V. Sanjay Kumar after he found the two senior officers guilty of wilfully disobeying the order of the High Court. He, however, suspended the sentence for one month.
Ms. Ranjeev Acharya is wife of B. P. Acharya, Principal Secretary, Home, who has been named as main accused in the Emaar Properties case in his earlier capacity as Managing Director of APIIC. She is presently Principal Secretary, Finance.
The issue pertains to one Sode Ramulu of Khamam district who was directed by the Mines Department to sign a lease deed within seven days but the copy of the letter was received by him on the seventh day. He filed a writ petition upon which the Court directed the department to allow him to execute the lease deed forthwith. The Assistant Director, Mines, felt that the delay could be condoned only by the Secretary. He sent the files to the Secretary and the formalities were completed only after four months in spite of repeated requests by the petitioner. He filed a contempt case and the Judge found that there was wilful violation of the orders.
