NEW DELHI: The Union Home Ministry has sought a report from the West Bengal government on the incidents of violence in the Bardhaman district of the State, even as three senior Union Cabinet Ministers — Pranab Mukherjee, P. Chidambaram and Mamata Banerjee — met on Thursday to take stock of the situation.
While the area has witnessed violence since mid-June, following the murder of a prominent district-level leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the meeting was convened a day after Congress legislators were attacked in the Mangalkot area of Bardhaman.
The three ministers first met in Mr. Mukherjee’s chamber in Parliament House, and were later joined by a dozen Trinamool Congress MPs, who spoke about the ongoing violence against political workers in the State by CPI(M) members.
Briefing mediapersons after the meeting, Ms. Banerjee said at least 40 political workers had been killed in West Bengal since the Lok Sabha results were declared. Regarding the attack on Congress legislators, she said a delegation of her MLAs had earlier been prevented from entering Mangalkot.
