Rainfall accompanied by lighting and thunder lashed various parts of the district on Wednesday night. The atmosphere in Tuticorin turned chill following the downpour.

Low lying areas and many roads including Victoria Extension Road, WGC Road and alongside of Palayamkottai Road were waterlogged.

Vehicular traffic was badly affected. Underground drainage works being executed by TWAD Board at a slow place got affected further. People were irked at the progress of such works under Tuticorin Corporation limits.

However, fishing operations continued on Thursday as weather warning did not restrict the fishermen taking up their routine work at sea.

Eighty eight mechanised fishing boats out of 262 boats off Tuticorin fishing harbour and many country boats ventured into the sea, according to sources from Fishing Harbour Management Wing.

No damage to houses or fatal loss was reported.

The highest amount of rainfall was recorded at Kayalpatnam with 105 mm.

Rainfall recorded in other parts of the district in mm: Tuticorin - 51, Tiruchendur - 43, Kovilpatti - 4, Srivaikuntam - 31.3, Ettayapuram - 2, Ottapidaram - 6.2, Sathankulam - 61, Vilathikulam - 13, Kulasekarapatnam - 53, Keela Arasaradi - 11, Vanchi Maniyachi - 10, Surnagudi - 3, Kadalkudi - 15, Vaipar - 14 and Kalugumalai - 20. Heavy rainfall lashed Tirunelveli also on Thursday evening.
