NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee donned the mantle of a headmaster on Wednesday in the hope that the spirit of Teachers’ Day would fetch him some cooperation from the members. But, to no avail.

Though members responded to his observation that “I only hope, at least today — on Teachers’ Day — you will listen to the Headmaster” with a loud burst of laughter, Mr. Chatterjee got little by way of cooperation from them.

No sooner had the laughter died down than the Opposition members were on their feet demanding a joint parliamentary committee on the nuclear deal with the United States.

And, no amount of pleading from the Speaker that they should allow question hour to be taken up cut any ice.
