BHOPAL: A surprise inspection of the railway godown here by Madhya Pradesh Food and Civil Supplies Minister Akhand Pratap Singh on Friday revealed that gunny bags picked up at random from a lot procured from the Union Government through the Directorate-General of Supplies & Disposal were underweight. After the inspection, the Minister said the weight of each standard gunny bag was supposed to be 670 gm but the bags picked up from the lot ranged in weight from 550 gm to 590 gm.

The State Civil Supplies Corporation has asked DGS&D and ISI to send their teams to examine the technical parameters of the bags.

An official spokesman told The Hindu that the rate of the gunny bags, received for storing foodgrains procured by the State Government, was fixed by the Centre and it was the responsibility of the Central Government to give the right kind of bags.
