The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee on Friday alleged that the attack by a “so-called Mahant” on human rights activist Swami Agnivesh at a public meeting here was part of the BJP's “conspiracy” to “disrupt” meetings addressed by anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare and others.

GPCC spokespersons Jayantilal Parmar and Manish Doshi claimed that the Karanj police, under whose jurisdiction the public meeting was held, were “informed” of possible attempts to disrupt the meeting and a personal attack on Swami Agnivesh, but they did not take any step.

Mr. Parmar and Dr. Doshi disputed Mahant Nityanand Das' claim that he was a “sadhu” who was “hurt” by Swami Agnivesh's adverse remarks that the holy Amarnath shrine was “artificially made” and the annual Amarnath yatra was a “religious deception.”

The GPCC spokespersons claimed that the actual name of Nityanand Das who had “affixed” Mahant before his name was Nilesh Parekh, who was an active BJP worker and was formerly a personal secretary of the chief whip of the State BJP Legislature Party. He was married and had a daughter. He also had a history of “attacking” Jain sadhus when he went to Junagadh in 2007, they claimed.
